East-West Alliance featuring Jay Thomas

Wednesday October 16th 7PM

When Yasuhiro Kohama was studying in New York in 1984 he had an epiphany while watching the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra at the Village Vanguard: he realized he would devote his life to creating groups to work together as human beings to create something beautiful. He has been leading big bands and small groups ever since. This group of incredible musicians from Japan and the US includes the renowned SRJO chair of 25 years, Phil Sparks; Atsushi Ikeda, one of the most famous sax players in Japan; Maya Hatch (Roosevelt High School jazz program-to the New School, NYC-to Tokyo); Daisuke Kurata from Japan who studied at the New School and often played the Sportsman's Club in Harlem; Yuri Hirate, spirited pianist; and PNW’s own indomitable Jay Thomas on trumpet and sax. Jay has been selected as a resident artist for this year's Earshot Jazz Festival, which is also featuring this band. This project is one of a kind. Don’t miss it.

Lineup: Yasuhiro Kohama (tenor and soprano sax), Atsushi Ikeda (alto sax), Jay Thomas (trumpet, sax), Maya Hatch (vocals), Yuki Hirate (piano, trumpet), Phil Sparks (bass), and Daisuke Kurata (drums)
